Many people get the George Cross mixed up with St George’s Cross.
St George’s cross is the flag for England and looks like this :
The George Cross, however, was an award for bravery given during and after the second world war from King George who was on the throne of England then.
The George Cross was normally awarded to individual people but, did you know that the island of Malta was awarded the George Cross in 1942 for the island’s “heroism and a devotion that will long be famous in history”* ?. Malta endured years of constant attack and had supply ships destroyed or cut off. In Malta, they still celebrate the anniversary of the first supply ship to break through as a national holiday. This is why you see the George Cross in the top left corner of the Maltese flag.
