What is Columbus Day?

Columbus Day was celebrated on Monday, October 10th this year. Students did not have school on this day, but may not know why.

Columbus Day is a national holiday in many countries. This holiday celebrates the official anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Unite States on October 12, 1942.

It is referred to as different names in other countries such as, “Day of the Race” in Latin America, “Day of the Americas” in Belize and Uruguay, etc.

This holiday has been unofficially celebrated since the late 18th century, and more officially in other countries since the early 20th century.

Colorado was the first state to officially celebrate the holiday in 1906.
