I think I have read a similar response to this from Chris McCarthy. Usage of didn't or did not and haven't or have not depends on a specific time element. I came up with these examples to show you:
I didn't see him leave. (In this example,it could be that the subject(him) left at a specific timeframe (yesterday, recently or today)
Haven't: I haven't seen that movie yet. (Contrary to the latter example, it could be at any point of time.)
