I think that we aren't very good English speakers (and listeners) to choose the only American or British English. I think we have to understand both English and American people, and people for whom English is a second language as well.
So if there were really differences (like a "lift" and an "elevator", it's the simplest) it would be nice to have some comments about both variants.
I think that apart from the greatest difference (which is the accent) there is no really great difference between British English and American English. Ofcourse, there are several expressions that aren't used in American English and vice versa, as well as some grammar peculiarities. But after all both languages are English, aren't they.
If you are a beginner and your teacher of English is British or uses British accent you tend to understand British English better, providing you are not confronted let's say with a Cockney. In such a case you may get a feeling that your tuition fee should be given back to you because by some dreadful mistake they have been teaching you some kind of strange language which you originally thought had been English.
Then it is a question of the speed of speech you are faced with. As to my experience, for a person who is not a native English speaker it is much easier to understand some other non-native English speaker (even if he speaks with a strong accent borrowed from his/her own mother tongue:-), than somebody who comes from UK ot US. It is because the speach of the native English speaker is absolutely fluent and fast and full of idioms or slang, not speaking of almost all word-endings lost somewhere amidst the fast-flowing current of words. This is natural ofcourse. After all, the English (or American) have been practicing their English since childhood, haven't they. As a result when confronted with an English native speaker the poor pupil of English ends up frustrated, discouraged and lost:-(.
Well, well. English is not difficult at all, but unfortunately it takes years to master the fluency. But, as everybody knows it's practice that makes perfect.
Finally, if I was asked which accent I preferred, I would have to admit that English English was my favourite.
Actually, I think American and British grammar are not that different. But most people prefer American English because it is more easy to speak. Although the English accent is one of the most difficult to perfect.
I think, The english and english american are different. Because, when I stay in HaNo three year ago. I learned english very well. But when I Have come to HCM city where use english america, they pronounce different with me. So it is difficult for me when they talking to me, and it is not easy for them to understand, because i stress high tone but they stress drop tone. But now, i have to learn american english, becuase allmost people in HCM city use it. and my job need it and when i defend my essay for master development economic, i have needed it.

I think British English is better, because I love the original. American English has so many slang and double-meaning words that makes it difficult to learn properly.
