Hi guys. Let's start a new topic about your favourite TV series or movie. Do you like it as a way to practise your listening? I really love 'The Sopranos' and 'Band of brothers', and 'The Godfather', of course. Especially, the first part of trilogy. I'm always watching it in English with English subtitles and I believe, that my listening and also my knowledge of 'slang' is much better. What type of movies do you like and why? Do you think that watching movies can help us to improve our vocabulary?

My recommendation is 'Friends'. It is good!

hi . how are u
I find it interesting that you are discussing American movies and what I can only surmise as American "Slang", yet you are using British spelling. Why do the British misspell such common words, lets see:
Favourite should be Favorite
Practise should be Practice
Then there is labour which should be labor and Harbour which should be harbor and the use of Whilst, which is a leftover from old English. A Shopping Centre should be Shopping Center. A lorie is a truck,a bonnet is a hood and a boot is a trunk. The English still use archaic words like carriage way for highway.
I am sorry, I just find it a bit arrogant as over 300 million speak what you would call American English, Hollywood, Microsoft and Apple all use American English of course. If anyone in this forum is interested in ensuring that you are speaking and writing for an American audience, please feel free to contact me.
There are many types of English: British English, American English, Australian English, South African English and so on. I don't believe that any one of these is the 'correct' or 'real' English. They all have equal value.
Hi .. I've been starting to watch BBC series.. I ordered dvd's from the Amazon.. My favourite one is the Shameless, it's quite funny .. I reccommend it to everyone .. But I can't understand it without substitle due to the Manchester accent =)
I have a question to Chris from an episode :
**We could say Dad's lost the plot so a home visit's a bit awkward at the moment**
I checked all the meanings of *plot* .. But still doesn't make of sense.
Yes, I agree - the Manchester accent can be tricky for English learners1
The idiom is 'lose the plot'. It means to go crazy or start behaving in a strange way.
Nice choice of TV show, by the way.
Chris
I liked watching "Friends", "IT Crowd", "The Big Bang Theory", "Lie To Me". I tried to watch "House M.D." with subtitles, but it was really hard, overflown with medical terms, on the other hand the human relation part was pretty easy. I like Jane Austen films "Pride and Prejudice" (1995 and 2005), "Persuasion", "Sense and Sensibility". Another my soft spot is trilogies "The Pirates Of Caribbean", "The Lord Of the Rings". I like cartoons, Disney movies and other jolly life-asserting movies.
Is anyone suggesting movies which is a British English ?
Hello !! Doesn't anyone have an idea about it ? I need good movies which is British English ..
saw mnik, did not work for me....the film as such was too naive.....srk though sincere was not convincing...any film has to be one of the following...1) entertaining---mnik was not 2) uplifting and inspirational--mnik was too simplistic and at times even naive 3) thought provoking...mnik had nothing new to say......if anyone wants to see great perfomances (with good script) see forest gump (tom hanks) and also watch i am sam starring sean penn.1:19 pm
I like British shows. "Doctor Who" is the greatest))) And also I like "Life on Mars" with John Simm, "Ashes to Ashes", "Merlin". And my favourite American shows are "Supernatural", "House M.D.", 'The Big Bang Theory")))
Oh, I see someone has problems with Manchester accent. I had them too. But after watching "LoM" and listening to all albums of "Oasis" it is not a problem now)))
ilove :
My favorite show is Greek and my favorite movie is Inception.
