Snakes are dangerous if they bite.

They is a pronoun. Snakes is an antecedent. The antecedent is the word that the pronoun is about.

A pronoun must always agree with its antecedent:

Masculine - James cleaned his car.
Feminine - Susan took her dog for a walk.
Neutral - The clouds have changed their direction.
Singular - The student carried his book.
Plural - The students carried their books.

Now choose the pronoun which agrees with the antecedent.

His, her, their

Hello! I think that HIS, HER and THEIR in the examples given are possessive adjectives or determiners, but not pronouns. They are all followed by a noun, so they cannnot be considered pronouns.
In the following sentence, though, THEIRS is a pronoun.

- I like your books, but not theirs. (=their books)

What do you think?

A Difficult Term

Such a difficult term 'antecedent', but rather easy task!!! Applause
But I made a mistake with mother-bear. Worried
Thank you for the Lesson! Smile

If a bear is 'it', like any

If a bear is 'it', like any other animal, why bear's baby is her baby but not its baby?

RE: mother bear

You are right that animals are usually referred to as "it", however the sentence contains extra information, "mother bear". We can now refer use a female pronoun. It is acceptable to use "it", but better to use "she".

Thanks,

Chris
